Regular brake servicing is vital to keep your brakes working effectively so you can drive safely. As your Acura dealership, we want you to know about some of the brake services we provide to keep your brakes in great shape.
Examples of Brake Services Available at Your Acura Dealership
Brake Pad Replacement
The brake pads fit into the calipers, which are positioned above the wheel rotors. The pads have a 1/2″ friction-producing material covering, and when you hit the brakes, the calipers close on either side of each rotor, forcing the pads against the rotors. The rotors are smooth, and the pads generate friction, which stops the wheels in seconds.
The pad’s material coverings gradually wear down, and once their thickness drops to 1/4, they need to be replaced. The brake warning light on your dashboard will illuminate to alert you, and you’ll also hear a high-pitched screeching noise each time you brake. The noise is caused by a metal spike inside the material that scratches against the rotor as an additional warning of worn pads. We can install new pads in minutes to fix this issue.
Leak Repair
Brake fluid provides the hydraulic power that allows the brake system to work. This highly pressurized fluid is forced toward the calipers when you apply the brakes, and it causes the calipers to close on the rotors, as we saw above. Age, rust, or damage from hard objects kicked up from the surface can damage parts of the braking system, causing a leak.
Leaking brake fluid isn’t easy to see, but you’ll feel its effects as the brake pedal provides less resistance. Pressure in the brake system drops as fluid is lost, and the lack of pressure reduces braking effectiveness. Stopping takes longer, and your stopping distance increases, making an accident more likely. We’ll trace and repair the leak, then refill the fluid, and the brake pressure will return to normal.
Brake Booster Repair or Replacement
Since the late 1960s, brake pedal boosters have been installed to make braking easier by reducing the amount of energy needed to get the brakes to work. The booster is positioned behind your brake pedal, and it magnifies the force you exert on the pedal by 10x. It generates this pressure using a rubber diaphragm and a vacuum system.
A crack in the diaphragm, a damaged booster valve, or leaking vacuum tubes can all cause the booster to fail. If this happens, the brake pedal will be very difficult to force down, drastically slowing brake responsiveness. We’ll check the booster and repair or replace it depending on the level of damage.
