Our New Jersey summers are wonderful, but you still need that refreshing pick-me-up of cold air from the AC. The AC, like all vehicle systems, requires regular maintenance to ensure it works efficiently. As your Acura dealership, we want to tell you a few signs you may need to visit our service department for air conditioning maintenance.

3 Signs You Need To Visit Your Acura Dealership for Air Conditioning Maintenance

Compressor Overcycling

The compressor acts as a pump that pushes refrigerant and air through the AC system to provide the crisp, cold air you need in the cabin. The compressor is controlled by the compressor clutch, which switches it on and off at regular intervals as air and refrigerant move through the system.

Overcycling is very different, as you’ll hear louder and more frequent sounds as the compressor switches on and off. The AC won’t produce consistently cold air and could even shut down unexpectedly. In addition, constant stopping and starting can damage the compressor and cause it to fail. Overcycling can be due to low refrigerant, a worn compressor clutch, or a damaged thermostat. We’ll examine your AC and fix the problem.

Blocked Vents

Air enters the AC system through a vent just below the windshield. In time, dirt, sand, leaves, or other debris can block the vent and reduce airflow into the AC. If this happens, we can quickly fix the issue by clearing the blockage so the AC can work correctly.

Dirt, dust, and sand can also accumulate and block the cabin air vents. In this case, the AC will produce cold air, but the airflow into the cabin can be drastically reduced depending on the quantity of debris in the ducts. We’ll remove any debris from the ducts, and the airflow will return to normal.

Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is a vital part of your AC as it removes moisture and chills the air that will cool your cabin. During the cooling process, the highly pressurized refrigerant changes from a gas to a liquid and back to a gas. Worn seals or damage to the AC system can cause a leak, and if this happens, the refrigerant will be rapidly lost, and the air blowing into the cabin will become warmer.

Unlike other possible fluid leaks, it won’t form a puddle under your vehicle as it disperses almost instantly in the air. Our technicians find the leak by adding a UV dye to the AC and following its progress through the system using a UV viewer. Once we find the leak, we’ll seal it and refill your refrigerant.
